George "Lil Sonny" Wilfred Jr., a promoter and former owner of Metro Press
Printing Co., died Monday of kidney failure at University Hospital. He
was 39. Mr. Wilfred was born in New Orleans and lived in Oakland, Calif.,
during the 1970s and in Folsom for the past eight years. He graduated from
Oakland High School and Contra Costa College in California. He and his
mother sold African clothing, homemade jewelry and "twist" hats under the
name Hattitudes each year at the Fair Grounds during the Jazz and Heritage
Festival. He was a former supervisor for Pelican Homestead and the 1984
New Orleans world's fair. He was a veteran of the Army Reserve. Survivors
include his parents, Shirley and George J. Wilfred Sr., and a sister, Shirleen
Paschal. A funeral will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Outreach Full Gospel
Baptist Church, 304 13th St., Franklinton. Visitation will be today from
7 to 8 p.m. at Magee Funeral Home, 2141 Washington Ave., New Orleans. Burial
will be in Resthaven Memorial Park.
