Walter Kent Newberry gave the city of Oakland, Ca and his parents, Walter & DeRethal Newberry much joy with his birth on September 9, 1946. He was the 2nd child born to this union and had two younger siblings. His parents and older sister Opal Renee preceded him in death. Walter accepted Christ at an early age. His early education was obtained through the Lutheran school system, he went to Oakland High School graduated in the class of '64. He also attended Merritt College.
Walter met the love of his life, Diane Devers while in high school. They dated for five years before marrying on August 18, 1968 at Third Baptist Church in San Francisco, Ca. To this union were born twins Darren Christopher and Lisa Diane on September 11th 1969.
Walter's career began at Montgomery Wards in Oakland, Ca and took him around the country from Chicago to Cincinnati and back to California. Walter became one of the top Commercial and Industrial Leasing Officers in the Nation working for GECC, Wells Fargo Leasing Company and Steelcase. After he retired from the financial industry, Walt spent some time at Carmax and then joined Southwest Airlines as a customer service agent, where they called him "stage one ambassador" at Los Angeles International.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 42 years, Diane; his daughter, Lisa; his son, Darren (Lesley); grandchildren Alexis, Dawson, Taylor, Sasha, Dane and Devon; sisterinlaw, Scarlett, sister, Dana (Craig); brother, Larry (Sherry); nieces, Stephani and Ashley; nephew, Matt; godson, Eric; cousin, Gina; best friend of 60 years, Reggie Franklin; his Southwest Airlines family and a host of family and friends.
He died June 24, laid to rest June 30. Services were held Faithful Central, 400 W Florence Avenue, Inglewood, Ca 90301. Arrangements entrusted to Rucker Funeral Home, 12460 Van Nuys Blvd., Pacoima, Ca 91331
