Slain Marine Hero Wins Decoration

Henry Wright Marine 2nd Lt. Henry A. Wright of Oakland has been awarded a posthumous Bronze Star Medal for valor for the Feb 6 action which cost him his life in Vietnam.

His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy E. Wright, 2932 Nicol Ave, received the medal from Col. Donald Kennedy, director of the 12th Marine Corps District Headquarters in San Francisco.

Lt. Wright was mortally wounded while leading a platoon to the relief of a company under attack south of Da Nang during the communist Tet offensive. He led an attack against heavily entranched enemy positions and was mortally wounded while directing covering fire for the evacuation of other wounded Marines.

During the action he carried his wounded radioman to safety and tended him until the arrival of a corpsman

Lt. Wright's initiative and fearless action were credited for the marines' success in breaching the enemy defenses.

Lt. Wright was a 1963 graduate of Oakland High School and a 1967 graduate of the US Naval Academy. He had been in Vietnam about one month.
