Bernadette Anne Henderson Bernadette Anne Henderson Resident of Oakland, CA Bernadette Anne Henderson passed away peacefully, on January 9, 2011, at the age of 66. She was preceded in death by her parents Fred Joel Henderson and Dorothy Jackson Henderson, brothers Karl and Rainard Henderson and niece Carlah Henderson. She leaves a brother Ocie Douglas Henderson, sister Virginia Henderson Nelson and brother-in-law Lewis Nelson. She is also survived by her nieces Jennifer Henderson Bazalaki, Kenisha Henderson, Jasmine Henderson, Leah Nelson and Angela Nelson, nephews Fred Henderson and Ocie Reginald Henderson, and numerous saddened and loving grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. Born on June 28, 1944, and raised in the Bay Area, she graduated from Oakland High School, earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from University of California, Davis and a Master of Science in Gerontology from Holy Names University. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority, and a faithful member of the Church by the Side of the Road. She overcame many obstacles in her life and was an inspiration to those whose lives she touched. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Bernadette's name to the Center for Elders' Independence (CEI), 510 17th Street, Suite 400, Oakland, CA 94612-1504. Friends and family are invited to a visitation Friday, January 14 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, CA 94611, (510) 654-0123. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 15 at 10:00 am, at Chapel of the Chimes, followed by a repast at The Church by the Side of the Road, 2108 Russell St., Berkeley, CA 94705, (510) 644-1263.
