Bay Bombers announcer Ken Kunzelman dies at the age of 63.
Kenneth Raymond Kunzelman was born June 22, 1942 at Oakland, California. He
died in a Manteca, California hospital on January 1, 2006 of natural causes.
While still attending Oakland High School in 1959, and doing a story on
the Roller Derby for the school newspaper at the Oakland Auditorium, he was given
a job by the Bombers as a scorekeeper. He was trained to be an announcer and
finally placed in-charge of publicity. Ken Kunzelman was the voice you heard in
the arenas if you attended the live games. He also did a daily recap of the games
with a 45 minute radio report in the 70's, and later became a television announcer
for the Roller Derby after Walt Harris. Ken Kunzelman was the longest standing announcer
in the history of the Roller Derby. He joined the Bombers in 1959, and he ended his career
in 1986. Funeral services for Ken Kunzelman will be held Saturday, March 4, 2006 at Machado's
Hillside Chapel on Harder Road at Hayward, California at 10:00a.m. Skaters and fans are invited.
