WILLIAM L. HARRISON A loving man who spent much of his life caring for others, died Sept. 18 at his East Oakland home after a long illness. Born on July 8, 1940, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, to Georgia Mae and Goldsmith Luster, the family relocated to Oakland in 1941. William was the eldest of five children. He graduated from Oakland High School in 1958 and in May 1969 married Beatrice Page. "Billy," as he was affectionately known, chose Jesus Christ as his savior at a young age and attended several churches, including Good Samaritan Church of God in Christ, Zion Second Church of God in Christ, where his uncle Oliver Shavies Sr. was the pastor, and most recently the Equator Faith Mission. A lover of gospel music and a fine singer, he was an original member of a gospel group known as the Five Disciples. A baker by trade, William and his wife also for decades have owned and operated a residential board and care home. Traveling, good food and laughter were his favorite pastimes, as was cooking Southern specialites for family and friends. He truly had extraordinary love for his family and had nicknames for all family members. He also had a way of making strangers and friends of his relatives feel welcomed and comfortable. Besides his wife, William is survived by his daughters, Vickie Bennett and Sophia Harrison, and his son, Carlton Harrison. He is also survived by his sisters, Mae Bachemin and Dolores Royal, and his brother, Paul Anderson, as well as seven grandchildren and dozens of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Fuller Funerals, 4647 International Blvd., Oakland. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Great Refuge Whittington Temple, 2001 73rd Ave., Oakland. Donations in William's name can be made to the American Cancer Society.
