Jan passed away at Kindred Hospital in San Leandro after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer and assorted heart and lung complications. She was born in Dennison, Iowa to Fritz and Clara Grell, moved to California shortly thereafter and was raised in Concord and Oakland. She graduated from Oakland High School in 1958 and worked for Royal Globe Insurance in San Francisco for the next five years.

Jan met her husband Mike and they were married in 1964 and began their family in 1965 with the birth of their daughter Lori, followed by their son Michael in 1967. The family moved from Oakland to Pleasanton in 1967 ( when there were more cows than people) and have been residents ever since. She found time to donate her services at Lydiksen Elementary while the children were attending and later gave over 4,000 hours of service to Valley Memorial Hospital in Livermore.

Jan came from a family of nine children and is survived by sisters Genevieve Lillyblade, Kathy Llamas and Nancy Metz. Her daughter Lori gave her three wonderful grandchildren, Travis -19 and twin girls Tracey and Trisha -13 She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their children.

No services were held. The family suggests that any remembrances be directed to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF).
