Kenneth Juichiro Kawakami was born on August 6, 1938 to Fusako and Shigeo Kawakami in Berkeley, California. Ken, along with his family was evacuated to Hila, Arizona during World War II. Upon the end of the war, Ken and his family relocated to Oakland, California. He attended Garfield Elementary School, Roosevelt Junior High School and Oakland High School. He was an athlete, participating in football and track and field. He went on to attend Oakland Junior College and graduated with a bachelor's degree for civil engineering from San Jose State while working fulltime. Post university, Ken served in the army corp. of engineers. Ken was a member of the team that searched Angel Island, looking for the only prisoner to escape Alcatraz. After serving in the army Ken went on to work as a civil engineer for the Port of Oakland for 25 years. Ken moved to San Leandro in 1979.
Ken had many hobbies which included fishing, scuba diving, travel, golf, and was an avid sports fan. In his retirement years he especially enjoyed golf and spending more time with his family, most recently his dog, Tobey.
Ken is survived by his sister, Marti Wakayama, brother in-law, Benny Wakayama, nieces, Laura Lee and Andi Wakayama, nephew in-law, Richard Lee, great-niece, Lindsay Lee and his beloved dog, Tobey. Ken was a great friend and will be remembered by many.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2007, at 1:00 PM at the Santos- Robinson Mortuary.
