STATE AIDS CONSULTANT DIES
SACRAMENTO, Sandra M. Glackin, a consultant with the Office of AIDS for the state Department of Health Services in Sacramento, died Friday morning in Valley Medical Center in Fresno from injuries suffered in a single-vehicle accident on Highway 99 near Pixley, Tulare County, 10 days earlier.
Glackin 57, represented the Office of AIDS throughout the state for three years, assisting local organizations in spending federal money allotted for the care of people with AIDS. She previously worked in a communications role for the state Employment Training Panel, which re-trains people receiving unemployment compensation.
Born Sandra Littlewood in Oakland, Glackin graduated from Oakland High School and majored in journalism at UC-Berkeley.
She joined The Sacramento Bee as a general assignment and features writer before becoming the paper's religion editor in the late 1950's.
After leaving The Bee in 1962, Glackin was a teacher for more than a decade and earned her teaching credential and later an administrative credential and master's degree in education and administration from Sacramento State College.
After the birth of her son, she left the work force for six years. She returned to teaching prior to working for the state.
Glackin was a former president of the church council of the Lutheran Church of the Master and enjoyed gardening and dogs.
She is survived by her husband of 30 years, William Glackin, a writer and arts critic at large for The Bee; a son, Brendan, a student at the University of Chicago; step-daughters, Christine Blacken of Alameda and Nancy Curtin of Bumpass, VA; and four step-grandchildren.
