Richard William Smitheram Sept. 30, 1934 - Oct. 25, 2009 Resident of Alameda Richard died peacefully in the comfort of his home with his immediate family by his side after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Richard William Smitheram was born in Los Angeles, California and moved to Oakland, California at 6 months old. He attended Oakland public schools beginning with Laurel Elementary School then Bret Harte Middle School and Oakland High School where he graduated in 1952. Richard attended college at San Jose State University until June of 1956 and received a Bachelor of Arts in Business and emphasis in Marketing. He was a proud member of the San Jose State University Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and maintained close friendships with his "Brothers" for many years. Richard served with the U.S. Navy from 1956 until 1976 and transferred to Active Reserve in 1978 until 1994 as Lt. Commander. While serving in the Navy, he attended Naval Officer's Candidate School in Newport Rhode Island. He also continued his training with the Navy at Aviation Ground Officer's School and Carrier Air Group 21 Staff. Richard started his professional career with Owens Corning Fiberglass Corporation in Santa Clara, California where he worked for approximately 6 years. Richard then moved on to Farmers Insurance Group in Oakland, California. After 3 years with Farmers, he moved on to Kaiser Sand and Gravel in Pleasanton, California, where he worked for approximately 16 years. Richard William Smitheram is survived by his wife, Bette, sons Damon (granddaughter Bridgette), Derek (Joanna), and sister, Alberta Bourne. Richard will be dearly missed by his family and friends and will always be remembered for his generosity and unselfish acts. A celebration of Richard's life will be held at his home and will include his family and friends. In lieu of flowers and gifts, a donation to the American Cancer Society in his memory will be greatly appreciated.
