RICHARD "DICK" HARRIS RANDALL Died peacefully at home after a long illness on October 9, 2003. The only son of Benjamin Jones and Elizabeth Halvorsen, Dick Randall was born in Oakland, California on February 12, 1934. He attended Oakland public schools and received a B.A. in political science from the University of California in 1956. As a distinguished military graduate, he attended armor training school at Fort Knox, serving in the Army and National Guard for ten years. After receiving his degree, Dick took a job with the Cith of San Leandro as a recreation supervisor, beginning a career that extended over 35 years. While rising through the ranks of city government, including service as recreation director and assistant city manager, he played an integral role in developing many projects including the Lake Chabot recreation area and the San Leandro Maria Shoreline. His career culminated in his appointment to the position of city manager, from which he retired in 1991. Also in 1956, Randall began a partnership that was to last even longer when he married Barbara Johnston. With a strong commitment to community and family, they moved to San Leandro, where they would make their home for more than 35 years, raising two children, Jeffrey Randall of Piedmont and Jill Gregori of San Leandro. Dick was active in many local groups, including Dad's Club, after-school athletics, scouting, the United Methodist Church and the Rotary Club. He was instrumental in starting the Roto-Carefree medical clinic in San Leandro and served on the board of the Eden Medical Center Foundation. After his retirement, Dick moved to Tuolumne County, building a home where the family had vacationed for three decades. He spent his remaining years there, surrounded by an ever-enlarging circle of friends. With his kindness and dignity, Dick was an inspiration to those around him. In addition to his adoring wife of 47 years and his children, he is survived and remembered by his son-in-law, Wayne Gregori, daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall and five grandchildren, Devan, Ben and Chloe Gregori and Richard and William Randall. A private family memorial service was held. Donations in his memory may be made to the Eden Medical Center Foundation and will be directed to the neuroscience program for research and treatment of brain disorders, 20103 Lake Chabot Road, Castro Valley, CA 94546 or to Hospice of the Sierra, P.O.
