Donald Sobek Don Sobek, 76, of Overland Park, KS, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2010 peacefully at his home in Overland Park. Visitation will be held Thursday evening, January 28, at The Church of the Nativity, 3800 West 119th Street, Leawood, KS, 66209 from 6-8 p.m., with a Rosary given at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 29, at The Church of the Nativity, 10 a.m. Burial services will be held at Resurrection Cemetery following the Mass. Don was born June 9, 1933, in Chamberlain, South Dakota, the son of Thelma and Kenneth Sobek. He graduated from Oakland High, in Oakland, California, and received a Bachelor of Science in Business from The University of California at Berkley. He served six years as an Airborne Ranger in the Army National Guard and Army Reserves, was stationed in Alaska and finished his service as a First Lieutenant and platoon leader. On September 9, 1961, he married Ruth Marie Donovan at Saint Paul The Apostle Church, Westwood, California. In January of 1964, Don and Ruth moved to Kansas City and lived in south Overland Park for the past 20 years. Don was a highly driven, entrepreneur who launched and grew several businesses in the financial services field for over 35 years. Block OAs one of his most notable accomplishments, he was awarded the greatest "Fan" by parents and players for his coaching, support, and ongoing appearances made at football, basketball, baseball, swimming, track meets, and volleyball games for his kids and grandchildren. Don is survived by his wife, Ruth, his brother, Dale W. Sobek, and four sons and daughters-in-law including Rick and Fran Sobek, Jim and Sherri Sobek, Mike and Leslie Sobek, and Steve and Julia Sobek. He was also the grandfather to twenty grandchildren and great- grandchildren. The Sobek family mourns the loss of the cornerstone of our family to whom we will all remember as a role model to guide us for the rest of our lives.
