E.G. Craig

Block O E.G. Craig, A.I.A. Sept. 5, 1926 - Nov. 25, 2010 Resident of Lafayette It has been one of Lafayette's best kept secrets - what the 'E.G' stood for. At the age of 84, and still working on several projects, E.G Craig, Architect, slipped away quietly in the early morning hours of Thanksgiving Day, with many friends, clients, and golf partners still wondering what his full name really was . . . Known widely and affectionately as simply 'E.G.' or Craig, this young man broke from the family meat business and opened his first building-design office in Lafayette - way back in 1956 - designing more than 30 custom homes, and numerous office buildings, banks and restaurants in this small town alone. Born at home in Oakland, E.G. graduated from Oakland High in 1944, E.G. Craig then joined the Naval Air Corps. E.G. - then met his future bride, Sheila Prentice, at the California College of Arts and Crafts and they married in 1949. E.G. is survived and lovingly remembered by Sheila and their four adult children - Laird, Christie, Gavin and Ian, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. E.G. will also be very fondly remembered by many special friends including Barbara Champion, Rich and Barbara Hammond, and if you ask them, E.G. stands for 'Exceptionally Gracious' . . . A Remembrance Gathering will be held Sunday, December 12, 2010 at the Lafayette Veterans Memorial Building, 3780 Mt. Diablo Blvd., Lafayette, between 3:30 and 6:00pm. Donations may be made to Children's Hospital (chofoundation.org). Thanks for everything ERWIN GIBSON CRAIG!
