Lois Jean Hafele Phelps was born August 30, 1922 to Geraldine Kroeckel and Harold Vistor Hafele in Oakland California. She passed from this life on January 2, 2010 in Enumclaw, Washington. Lois was raised in Oakland, save for a couple of years her family lived in the Hawaiian Islands. She graduated from Oakland High in January of 1941 and spent her freshman year of college at the University of Oregon where she became the "Sweetheart of Sigma Chi". The following year she re-met Robert Linn Phelps [Class of 1939], an upper classman from Oakland High and after a "whirl wind" courtship of 4 weeks they married on June 30, 1942. They went on to have a fantastic life. Living in cities and towns up and down the Pacific coast. They were a very social couple and avid golfers. They were former members of Sandpoint Country Club in Seattle and Shadow Mountain Country Club in Palm Desert, California among others. Lois took up oil painting in her 50's and leaves some beautiful canvases for her family to prize and enjoy. In later years Lois volunteered at the Eisenhower Medical Center Gift Shop and at the Betty Ford Center where she enjoyed the association of those who feel the importance of giving back.
She leaves four daughters, Lynne (James) Penhollw of Edmonds and Superstion Mt. AZ, Dianne (Fred) Ray of Federal Way, Suzanne (Stanley) Mak of Kingston, and Melissa (Jack) Ellis of Stanwood.
