Robert Hall Robert Pearson Hall Loving husband of Ruth Sheldon Hall, 1945 Stanford graduate, longtime resident of San Mateo, passed away on Memorial Day, May 30, 2011. Bob was born on March 9, 1923 in Salt Lake City, Utah and grew up in Oakland, California where he attended Oakland High School and excelled in all the major sports including football which became his passion. His father, Walt, was the football coach at Oakland High and turned their program into an East Bay powerhouse. After graduating in 1940, Bob immediately went to work for the Shell Oil Company working on their oil fields' pipeline to prepare himself for the upcoming football seasons at Stanford University. As a sophomore, Bob was a starting end on the varsity team a year after the "T" formation was instituted at Stanford. Bob became a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity where he developed lifelong friends. During WWII Bob attended Colorado College for Naval officer training. He was asked to call signals on the football team as an end, as part of the only untied, ranked, undefeated, Colorado College team ever. While at Colorado College, Bob was selected as second team All American for the 1943 season. Bob served as U.S. Navy Ensign during WWII campaigns in the South Pacific, primarily in the Palau area, and reached the level of Lt. (j.g.). After WWII, Bob married the love of his life, Ruth Sheldon, in 1950 at Lake Tahoe which also marked their commitment to the family cabin at Meeks Bay. Bob helped his father, Walt, build the log cabin in the late 40's and Tahoe became a treasured family vacation ever since. Bob then started a career in the wholesale lumber business with Higgins Lumber that lasted over 39 years. Bob was a member of the San Mateo Elks for over 40 years, and later enjoyed traveling the globe with his devoted wife Ruth during his retirement years. Robert Hall Bob was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who will always be remembered for his dry sense of humor, his own understated style of living, and loyalty to his family and friends. Bob is survived by his wife Ruth, his son Robert and daughter-in-law Gayle, and his three grandchildren Justin, Nathan, and Jennifer. He is predeceased by his son Stephen. He is also survived by his brother Jay Hall, and his sister Sue Kelemen. The Hall family will conduct a private burial at St John's Cemetery in San Mateo on June 10. Family and friends are invited to a "Celebration of Life" memorial at Stanford University at the Faculty Club located at 439 Lagunita Drive, Stanford on July 9 from l:00 to 4:00 pm.
