Mary Smejkal Mary Timmer Walnut Creek Resident Mary Elizabeth Smejkal Timmer died on January 1, 2011 just 20 days shy of becoming 90 years old. She was the daughter of Joseph and Augustus Smejkal from Oakland, CA. She grew up in Oakland, attending Oakland High School followed by attendance at Franklin Hospital in San Francisco where she graduated with a nursing degree during The War. She was the evening residential nurse at St. Mary's College in Moraga for 28 years, retiring in 1990, a full time mother to her own 5 children, a mentor to many Alanon members, a second mom to many, especially the Lawrence kids down the street, a good aunt, a good sister and a friend to many. She was an avid reader and had a way with words and sage advice, accompanied by a fabulous sense of humor. She enjoyed opera and music of many genres and live plays and musicals performed around the Bay Area. She was a fantastic cook, except for broccoli. She spoke often and fondly of attending polkas at the German Center and summers at Lake Tahoe while her parents cooked for various organizations during her childhood. 'Betty' lived in Walnut Creek for 58 years. Preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Woodrow Wilson Timmer, her parents, her brother Joseph Smejkal (Mary) and two siblings who died in early childhood. She is survived by her daughter and full time caregiver, Christine Timmer, her daughters Katherine, Theresa and Heidi and her son Joseph. She is also survived by her sisters Ruth Gerner (Edward), Frances Reeder (Charles), May Baker (Orion), sister-in-law Anne Timmer (Everett), her grandchildren Matt Timmer (Jesssica), Amanda Dempster (Robbie), and Clayton Timmer (Brandi). She is the great-grandmother to seven and the aunt to 37 nieces and nephews, and surrogate to many, many more. Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral mass of Celebration at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Walnut Creek, Saturday, January 15 at 11:00am on Mt. Diablo Blvd. and a gathering in the church hall following the mass.
