Bette Simon

Bette Simon Bette Rose Gordon Age 86, Piedmont resident, died peacefully at home on February 9, 2008 following a stroke of two weeks ago. She was born in Oakland, attended Oakland High School and graduated from San Francisco State College. Bette is survived by her husband Arthur (Buss) Gordon; three children: Jeff Abouaf, Ted Gordon and Dick Gordon; and her brother Aaron Simon [Class of 1943]. Predeceasing her was her daughter Robin Colvin; her brother Stanley Simon; and her first husband Morris Abouaf (1961). Family and friends knew her as a kind and generous person, filled with happiness, wisdom and a loving heart. Even into her mid-80s she was often heard to say, that every single day, she and her husband laughed together and found much joy in life. Bette found great pleasure in playing mahjong and having lunches with her many friends and with her family. Bette was one of the original founders of, and the inspiration behind, the Diabetic Youth Foundation, a nonprofit charity providing free and low-cost camp experiences for diabetic children. Her daughter, Robin, was a diabetic child, and in the late 1950s there were no camps or organizations in California for children to discover how to give themselves shots, learn to understand their illness and mingle with other children suffering from the same disease. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 AM at Home of Eternity Cemetery, 5000 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland. Donations can be made to the Diabetic Youth Foundation, 5167 Clayton Road, Suite F, Concord, CA 94521.
