Anne Hester ANNE AILEEN MADDERN Formerly Aileen Harris, died suddenly Feb. 23 in her Oakland home at the age of 82. Born in Cincinatti, Ohio on Aug. 14, 1921, she was the first child of William and Gertrude Hester. Her family moved to the Calistoga-St. Helena area and eventually settled in Oakland, where she lived for more than 60 years. A 1939 graduate of Oakland High School, she worked for the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corp during World War II. She married well-known Oakland photographer Albert "Kayo" Harris in 1946, a union that lasted for more than 20 years, and was a co-owner of their photography business. From 1980 until 1998, she was married to Eldon Maddern. Both of her husbands are deceased. Besides helping run the photography business, she was also a talented and capable bookkeeper and accountant, positions she held for many years with Anderson Printing Company. She is survived by her children, Harry, Mark and Sherrill Harris, her grandson John Calvin Harris Sr. and his wife, Kelly, and her great-grandchildren, John Jr., Jacob and Marcus Harris. She is also survived by her brothers, William and Allen Hester, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held Monday, March 1, at 11:00 a.m. at Colonial Chapel, 2626 High St., Oakland. Donations in her name can be made to the American Diabetes Association.
