Dr. Charles L. Coleman Jr.

Charles Coleman April 14, 1921-May 23, 2008 A native Californian, he was a third generation Bay Area physician and surgeon. He passed peacefully at his home in Piedmont, California. His grandfather, Charles Spafford Coleman, was a pioneer physician in San Leandro and one of the founders of the Alameda County Medical Association. His father, Charles, and his father's twin brother, George, were among the first graduates of the Stanford Medical School and also practiced medicine in the East Bay. Like his father before him, he served as Chief of Surgery at Merritt Hospital.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Teressa(Teddie); daughter, Claudia of Sacramento, CA; son, Charles III, daughter-in-law, Juliana, and two granddaughters, Georgina Coleman and Eleanor Coleman, all of Mill Valley, CA.,

He graduated from Oakland High School, received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, and received his M.D. degree from Mc Gill University. He did post-graduate medical work at McGill University, the University of California(San Francisco) and Highland Hospital. He served for two years as a surgeon at the Tokyo Army Hospital during the Korean War. He was a fellow of the American Board of Surgery, a member of the American College of Surgeons, he Alameda-Contra Costa Medical Association, and the American Medical Association. He was one of the founders of, and was first President of, the East Bay Surgical Society.

At his request, there will be no memorial service. Memorial donations may be made to Stanford University of a charity of your choice. Donations to the Stanford Fund in his memory may be mailed to Stanford University, Gift Processing, P.O. Box 20466, Stanford, Calif. 94309-0466.
