Shirley Louise Champion (Armstrong)

Shirley Champion Our Lord's Child, Shirley Louise Armstrong, went to her Heavenly rest on April 17, 2008. She was 87 years old. Shirley was born in San Francisco. She went on to graduate from Oakland High School in 1939 and received her AA Degree in 1964 from Oakland City College. A true American Patriot, Shirley would take action when she saw a flag improperly displayed or tattered. Shirley was a devoted member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars from the 1940's until her death.

Shirley was preceded in death by her treasured husband, Bill, of 62 years. They enjoyed travelling and playing bridge. Shirley was also preceded in death by her by her beloved and dearly missed mama, Elmyra Champion and her much beloved "Big Sister" Mitzi Warren. Shirley was an active member of the Alta Mira Women's Club of San Leandro and participated in their many philanthropic projects. Shirley is survived by her daughters, Susan Louise Timberman of Newark and Shirell Lynn King and her husband Tom of Barstow. She leaves her much beloved grandchildren, Elizabeth Burchell, John Timberman and his wife, Cherie, and Mark Timberman and his wife, Julie. She also leaves her great grandsons, Christopher Garot and his wife Bonnie, Timothy Garot and his wife, Melissa, Tyler Burchell and Cameron Burchell. She also leaves her wonderful nieces and nephews and many friends. Shirley was very excited anticipating the births of her twin great granddaughters and her great great grandson this summer. She was looking forward to a shopping trip to Babies R Us.

Services will be held Monday, April 28, 2008 at 10 am at the Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Blvd, Hayward. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested in Shirley's name to the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Department of California, 3100 Fite Cir, Ste 108, Sacramento, CA 95826, earmark the donations to the "Special Projects: Veterans." All donations go to our Veterans. Shirley was very proud of her husband, W.G. Armstrong, who served in WWII, and her grandson, John Timberman, who served in Iraq.
