Barbara Campbell O'Hara Passed away suddenly from a bleeding ulcer on July 23, aged 87.
Born in Berkeley to Brayton and Agnes Campbell, Barbara was a graduate of Oakland High and UC Berkeley. She was a 40-year resident of Orinda. Supporting herself in college as an Oakland City playground director, she organized "Castleteen" dances and staffed the Oakland Children's Christmas Pageant.
During her long and illustrious career, Barbara was a county social worker; served as Redding's Director of Camp Fire Girls; and helped launch Great Society Programs, administering Office of Economic Opportunity, Head Start, and Native American programs.
Traveling extensively in the Southwest and the Pacific, she acquired a special love of Hawaii and its warm aloha spirit. She was an avid gardener and a long-time San Francisco Opera patron. Barbara was an unwavering force in support of her loved ones and in defense of her convictions.
With her warm, vivacious nature she touched the hearts of a wide circle of family and friends. She leaves behind her loving and devoted husband of 60 years, John L. O'Hara, Jr.; daughter Susan O'Hara (Richard Crook); brothers-in-law Kenny and Dennis (Diana) O'Hara; two adoring grandchildren, Caitlin and Fiona Crook; many nieces and nephews; and countless dear friends.
A Memorial service and celebration of her life will be held on August 13th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Moraga Valley Presbyterian Church 10 Moraga Valley Lane. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society , the San Francisco Opera, Alu Like (www.alulike.org, a Native Hawaiian human services agency), or your favorite charity.
