John Leo Purcell July 8, 1919 - February 10, 2010 Jack passed away peacefully at home with sons Patrick and Michael present on February 10, 2010. Born in Oakland, California, to Harriett and Purse Purcell, Jack attended Oakland High School, College of Marin, and UC Berkeley. Jack's father Purse was a founding member of the ILWU in San Francisco. World War II interrupted Jack's time a Berkeley when he enlisted in the US Army. Jack was solider in the 11th Armored Infantry Division, in General Patton's 3rd Army. Jack saw action at the Battle of Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart. Upon return to the States after the War, Jack completed his education at Berkeley earning a Bachelor degree in Economics in 1946. In that same year, Jack married Oakland native Mary Larkin. Jack was a member of the ILWU local 34 where he worked for 46 years until his retirement in 1982. Jack lost his beloved wife after 38 years of marriage in 1985 and tragically lost his son Kevin in a fatal car accident that same year. Jack was an avid golfer and developed many friendships at the Indian Valley Golf Club where he was member. He traveled extensively during his retirement and spent many summer in Alaska fishing. Jack is survived by his brother Harry Purcell of Alameda, California. The family would like to extend its deep thanks to Hospice by the Bay and the staff a Kaiser Hospital in Terra Linda. At Jack's request, there will be no memorial services.
