Bernice F. Cotella -- 1919 - 2009 Resident of Alameda Bernice passed away peacefully at home in Alameda on January 23, 2009, after 89 years of life. Born to Louis and Louise Phillips on September 5, 1919, she grew up in Oakland and graduated from Oakland High School. Shortly after marriage, she moved to Alameda where she raised her family.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, John (Bud) Cotella, who owned and operated Cotella Brothers, a wholesale produce company for over 50 years. Once her children were grown, Bernice joined her husband in operating the family business.
Bernice was a devoted mother to her son, John (Buddy) Cotella and his wife Elaine of Lafayette; her daughter Marlene Grcevich and her husband, Dave of Alameda; a proud grandmother to Christine Cotella, Johnny Cotella and Alison Grcevich and an adored great-grandmother to Caris Hart. She also leaves her loving brother and sister-in-law Louis and Bernadette Phillips and many cherished nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Robert Phillips. The family extends their special thanks to her loyal and devoted caregivers, Cora and Nila for their excellent care.
Bernice will be remembered for her love of life, her infectious laugh, her kindness and generosity and her love of family and friends. We are all fortunate to have had Bernice in our lives and she will live forever in our hearts.
