Sylvia Danzig Cohen 2 February 1920 - 9 November 2007
Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, Sylvia came to Oakland at the age of 10 with her parents and brother Paul in the cross country trek of many depression-era families.
She was a 1936 graduate of Oakland High School, a 1940 graduate of the University of California/Berkeley and later obtained a master's in education from San Francisco State.
Teaching was her passion.
From her first job at Concow School (Butte County) to the Richmond Ship Yards to the Oakland School District (Auditorium Village, Hillcrest, Broadway Terrace and Redwood Heights), the classroom and reading skills were her forte. Even in her retirement she spent hours as an ESL, Laubach Literacy and Russian resettlement volunteer.
A full life was filled with adventure, joys, some disappointments, travel and books.
Her eighth decade was spent at Sunrise of Oakland Hills where she experienced constant entertainment, romance and the love of the wonderful staff and residents.
