James Reginald Allen, M.D. Dr. James R. Allen, a well known dermatologist in San Mateo, died Friday morning after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was 93. Having graduated from Oakland High School, Pomona College, and the University of Rochester School of Medicine, Dr. Allen served honorably in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific theater during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star. In 1945 he married Lois Christine Armagost, his loving wife of 57 years, until her death in 2001. Dr. Allen was known as an "old school" doctor, giving ceaselessly and generously of his time to his patients and his community. As the oldest playing member of the California Golf Club, his passion for the sport kept him on the course until just two months ago. He was also an avid gardener and stamp collector. Those who knew him best share the sense of knowing a rare man whose kindness, honesty, sense of humor, humility, and most importantly, whose decency continues to inspire.
Dr. Allen is survived by his sons, Bob (Bobbi) Allen and Jim (Liz) Allen of Davis, CA, daughter Betsy Allen of Portland, OR, and son Rocky (Julie) Allen of Burlingame, CA; as well as seven grandchildren: Gabrielle (Allen) Villa of Woodland, CA, Persephone Allen of Sacramento, CA, Nick and Jon Allen of Burlingame, CA, Katie and C.J. Allen and Raquel Silva of Davis, CA; and four great-grandchildren: Antonio and Cecilia Villa of Woodland, CA, Kennedy Warner and Elijah Riffel of Davis, CA. He is also survived by his dear friend and companion Beverly Ryman of San Mateo, CA. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the American Cancer Society, 1650 S. Amphlett Blvd., Ste. 110, San Mateo, CA 94402
