OAKLAND, Cal., Sept 26.-- William Maher, 20 year old full back of the Oakland
High School died in a hospital here early today of a broken neck, the first victim of a major football
accident in the bay region this year.
Playing against Fremont High School yesterday, Maher gave no indication he was
injured until he collapsed at the end of the second quarter. At the hospital it was found he had
suffered a broken vertebrae and he died a few hours later.
His team won, 26 to 0.
