ANGELES GRECIA AMOROSO MENDOZA JUCUTAN
Age 97, affectionately known as "Angie" or "Grandma Angie" was born in Jaro, Iloilo, in the Philippines and has been a long-time Oakland resident since her arrival in the U.S. in 1923. She is the wonderful and understanding mother of Alfred Mendoza and wife Doring, Elizabeth Megino and husband Honofre and Benjamin Mendoza and wife Patricia; grandmother of Michael Mendoza, Valerie and Richard Steffen, John Mendoza, Jean and Edward Ranck, Stephanie Megino-Chow and Berton Chow, Rosalinda Baylan Megino-Cravagan and Jay Cravagan, Catherine Megino, Alicia and Stephen Franaszek, Monica and John Casey, Margaret Mendoza, Sally and Ronald Oto, Mark Leyva, Stephen and Karen Tablizo and Leo and Karen Sacramento: great-grandmother of Kellen and Colombe Steffen, Luke and Danielle Mendoza, Shawn and Conner Ranck, Caroline Iwamoto, Christopher Topham, Steven Mecke, Matthew and Thomas Franaszek, Serafina Casey, Janelle and Nicholas Oto, Brandon Leyva, Daniel and Kirsten Tablizo and Chelsea and Whitney Sacramento. She was preceded in death by her husbands Antonio Judan Mendoza (1937) and Flaviano Apilado Jucutan (1967) and her two children Patricia Ann Leyva Tablizo (1998) and Edward Herbert Mendoza (1998). She has relatives in the Philippines and will be missed by her relatives and many friends especially as a member of the Bohol Circle Club of Alameda where she socialized with the other senior citizens. She graduated from the old Oakland High School, took courses from the Institute of Banking and at Merritt College, and completed the course in cosmetology at the Marinello School. She worked in the Del Monte cannery, as a pantrywoman at Plands, the Oakland Athletic Club, and Black Sheep restaurants and retired as the owner of her own beauty salon. Well known as an avid knitter she completed more than 400 items including sweaters, vests, scarves, helmets, slippers and even mittens. Left-over yarn was crocheted into granny squares and made into afghans. Angie enjoyed her many trips to Lake Tahoe and Reno and the social activities as a member of the Bohol Circle Club. Her travels included several trips to Hong Kong and even into China while in her 80s and numerous trips to Lake Tahoe and Reno. Family and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Liturgy Friday May 3, 2002 at 1 PM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 4025 Martin Luther King Jr. Way at 40th St., Oakland. Friends may call for visitation Wednesday and Thursday from 3 PM until 9 PM at Grant Miller - John Cox Mortuary, 2850 Telegraph Ave., Oakland. A Rosary will be held Thursday at 7 PM at the mortuary chapel. Interment, St. Mary's Cemetery in Oakland. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to your favorite charity.
