OAKLAND MAN, LIEUTENANT, IS KILLED IN ACTION
Lieutenant Hascall F. Waterhouse, USMC, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Waterhouse of this city, graduate of the Oakland High School, and the first of the "Yoke Fellows' " class of the First Congregatioal Church, which is now practically all in army service, to fall, has been killed in action in France, according to official information recieved by his parents today.
Waterhouse enlisted in the Marine Corps as a private last June, and took the examination for the officer's camp. He was commissioned last October, and shortly after left the training camp at Quantico for Europe. He was not yet 21 years old.
The dead officer is the son of C. J. Waterhouse, prominent building contractor of Oakland and Los Angeles, and graduated from the Oakland High School three years ago. He had completed his freshman and sophomore years in the University of California before enlisting in the marine corps. He was a member of the Abracadabra Club, the Alpha Chi Sigma and the Phi Lambda Upsilon fraternities.
He was one of the leaders in the "Yoke Fellows' " Club of the First Congregational Church, headed by Ralph Fisher, and the members of which, almost to a man, enlisted in the army or navy.
He is survived by his parents, a sister and two younger brothers, all residing at the family home at 374 Jayne Street. He was the descendant of Revolutionary heroes on both his mother's and father's side of the family. He was prominent in college social life and the family is well known in East Oakland.
